General Information

TransCanada’s Facilities Integrity Engineering team in the Facility Integrity and Process Safety department within TransCanada’s Technical Centre is seeking an experienced, process safety focused Mechanical Engineer to work as part of a team to improve the Company’s Facility Integrity Program. *This position will be located in either Calgary, Alberta or Houston, Texas depending on where the successful applicant currently resides. Responsibilities

  • Lead hazard analysis and risk assessment on process safety critical equipment;
  • Provide technical expertise for pressure piping and pressure equipment which can include valves, valve operators, pressure vessels, pressure control devices and systems, over-pressure protection devices and systems, and other mechanical equipment used in pipeline facilities;
  • Develop and update company design standards and operational procedures;
  • Provide integrity planning and engineering support for facility equipment in both TransCanada's regulated and non- regulated businesses;
  • Develop risk management tools and processes in conjunction with risk-based asset management strategies;
  • Design and provide operational support for new and existing facilities within TransCanada;
  • Participate in the technical qualification of engineering contractors and equipment suppliers;
  • Coach, mentor, and provide technical leadership to more junior staff;
  • Ensure project designs of systems are fit-for-purpose as well as meet safety, engineering, quality, regulatory, environmental, commercial, operating, and maintenance requirements;
  • Ensure compliance to design and construction specifications and standards;
  • Provide or oversee engineering, quality assurance and quality control activities;
  • Apply your knowledge of engineering principles, codes, and standards to identify issues, recommend improvements and implement solutions;
  • Understand and utilize TransCanada’s Management System approach to integrity and risk.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent Technologist Certification recognized by APEGA including registration as a professional;
  • 6 or more years of progressive engineering experience in the design, installation and commissioning of pipeline systems;
  • Broad pipeline facilities and mechanical engineering expertise focused on the design, operation and maintenance of natural gas and oil transmission pipeline systems;
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication and influencing skills to be able to work with company stakeholders across North America with different backgrounds and priorities;
  • Ability to plan, manage, and prioritize work. Due to the diverse and demanding business requirements within TransCanada, candidates must be technically flexible, learn quickly, and be able to provide a high degree of quality work which is consistent and meets or exceeds customer expectations;
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable industry Codes and Standards related to pipeline and facilities engineering (e.g. CSA Z662, ASME B31.3, ASME B31.4, ASME B31.8, ASME Section VIII, API pressure equipment standards);
  • Willingness to travel within North America for limited periods of time.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Independent and self-motivated;
  • At least one area of working knowledge of pipeline process/hydraulics engineering, instrument and control design;
  • Experience in Facility Integrity Management;
  • Experience in Risk Management;
  • Knowledge of TransCanada’s Engineering practices and procedures.
