TransCanada has an exciting career opportunity as an Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Technologist on the Welding & Materials Engineering team. In this role you would work within a team of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in the areas of welding, materials, coatings and NDE to contribute to the company's position as a world-class leader in the design, construction and operation of pipeline and energy facilities.

 

Reporting to the Manager of Welding & Materials Engineering, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining NDE Specifications and Procedures applicable to multiple methods and disciplines, implementing specification requirements, enforcing engineering and quality management systems through pre-qualification, process and document reviews on each project working to ensure project completion within the schedule.  If you like to be challenged at any stage of an asset lifecycle, have a passion to influence an industry in achieving something more and have an internal drive to achieve results, this may be the position for you.

 

Responsibilities

  • Deliver day to day technical support in all areas and methods in the field of NDE; 
  • Provide companywide support regarding NDE for all Compression projects, pipelines, fabrication, facilities and maintenance projects;
  • Develop and maintain NDE engineering specifications, procedures and standards;
  • Review and approval of suppliers and their NDT procedures utilized on projects;
  • Collaborate with supply chain management, project and external vendors/contractors to maintain project schedule and qualify new NDE vendors where needed;
  • Train field visual welding inspectors in relation to NDE and the methods commonly employed by TransCanada;
  • Oversee all nondestructive evaluation work from approved vendors and perform field assessments as deemed necessary;
  • Guide and provide technical expertise and information in response to Regulatory requests.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Level 2 CGSB Certification either Radiographic or Ultrasonic test methods and a general knowledge in other NDE methods such as magnetic particle and liquid penetrant inspections;
  • Knowledge and experience in advanced ultrasonic testing methods such as Manual Phased Array ultrasonic testing and/or automated ultrasonic testing;
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of progressive NDE field experience related to the construction and/or maintenance of oil and gas transmission systems; 
  • Knowledge of Regulations, Codes and applicable Standards (e.g. CSA, ASME, API) for pipeline and associated facility construction in Canada, USA and Mexico;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a strong attention to detail;
  • Adaptability in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities and challenges;
  • Ability to proactively engage and work with team members and stakeholders towards positive outcomes;
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Level 3 CGSB Certification either Radiographic or Ultrasonic test methods and a general knowledge in other NDE methods such as magnetic particle and liquid penetrant inspections;
  • Registered or eligible to be registered as a Professional Technologist (P.Tech) with the Association of Science & Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET);
  • Technical background in advanced nondestructive techniques such as crack tip diffraction and Time of flight diffraction
  • Experience with mechanized welding systems used for mainline welding and fabrication welding;
  • Experience with industry welding standards, i.e. ASME IX, API 1104, CSA Z662;
  • Experience with in-service welding procedures and knowledge of nondestructive examination techniques and their applications;
  • Excellent analytical and decision-making skills.

  • Have the ability and willingness to travel to suppliers in North America;

  • Be available for extended work hours outside of standard business hours, and call-outs as needed;

  • Travel to other locations for temporary assignments, meetings or training which would involve significant (up to 30%) overnight stays away from home.
