General Information

Reporting to the Operations Team Leader, the Operator acts as “Operations Leadperson” responsible for operating and maintaining a principal compressor station to affect continuous, efficient and safe operations.

 

*This position is represented by the USW Local 573 and the filling of the position is subject to the terms and conditions of the governing collective agreement.

 

Responsibilities

Operations

  • Operating compressor units in accordance with gas control, which requires knowledge of start-up and shutdown procedures and operating limits of station equipment to make operations safe and efficient; carries out instructions for changes in pressures of flows;
  • Coordinate with gas control in operating of facility; operates facility consistent with needs and efficiency;
  • Ability to understand piping operating drawings;
  • interprets and/or records reading on instruments, charts and gauges  and their related mechanical equipment and automatic controls;
  • blowing vessels and drips;
  • changing charts;
  • keeping equipment oil and water tanks filled;
  • cleaning and housekeeping of facilities;
  • ascertains that equipment is functioning properly and attempts to rectify malfunctioning equipment by making operating adjustments and/or reporting to proper TransCanada personnel;
  • Uses indicator to balance engine to see if each cylinder is carrying its share of total power;
  • check pressure gauges and valve positioners for proper operations;
  • Manage contractors and vendors while on-site;
  • trains new employees;
  • Maintain inventory and supplies;

 

HSE

  • Adhere to company Safety policies and procedures;
  • Adhere to environmental policies by collecting samples, following appropriate reporting procedures and associated clean up of any spills;
  • Must be willing to be confined-space trained;
  • Knowledgeable of appropriate health and safety training in order to adhere;
  • Assists in planning of work and participates as necessary in safety and/or team meetings and discussions;

 

Reporting and Recordkeeping

  • Maintaining necessary reports;
  • Reporting pressures to gas control;
  • Assist in the compilation of shipping manifests, and completes various reports as required;
  • Uses computer for various tasks including but not limited to, time entry, e-mail, environmental reporting, station reporting;
  • Capturing and reporting work in SAP;

 

Testing and Inspection

  • Conducting water tests and treatment;
  • Monitoring dew point of gas;
  • Periodically inspecting the following types of equipment for proper functioning:  engines and compressors , oil and water, methanol/biocide, vacuum pumps, fans, boilers, condensing equipment, heat exchangers,  air compressors, storage batteries, electric motors and generators, valves and piping, tank/dike facilities, line heaters, gas cleaning and conditioning equipment;
  • Assists in performing tests and inspections as required;
  • Inspects and maintains all safety related equipment;
  • Performs atmospheric corrosion inspections;
  • May be required to be NDI/NDT certified;

 

Maintenance

  • Makes minor repairs to equipment as needed;
  • change filters;
  • changes compressor valves;
  • paints equipment and buildings;
  • maintain force feed lube system;
  • Valve maintenance;
  • Assist with prime mover and compressor overhauls;
  • Assists with all station maintenance as required;
  • Other tasks as required.

Qualifications & Education

Qualifications

  • Must be capable of understanding and carrying out instructions, in all kinds of weather and in remote mountainous terrain;
  • Above average ability to learn higher level jobs such as Pipeliner A / Heavy Equipment Operator;
  • Dependable in terms of adherence to deadlines and presence on the job and maintains good attendance record.

 

Education / Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required;
  • Basic Computer skills required;
  • Ideal candidate operates fill-in at station when required or has operator experience from other related facility;
  • Must be capable of obtaining required op-qual tasks for the position.

 

*This position requires candidates to:

  • Have and maintain a valid driver's license;
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment medical screening, including drug and alcohol testing;
  • Work rotating shifts, in addition to change shifts on short notice;
  • Be available for overtime, extended work hours, and call-outs as needed;
  • Work in extreme weather conditions;
  • Travel to other company locations for temporary assignments, maintenance, meetings or training which would involve some overnight stays away from home.
